Week Six

What is the story about?
The story is about a man named Dom who has an occupation of invading his clients' dreams and retrieve information from the human mind. The main plot line revolves on Dom's latest client who is a businessman, Mr. Saito who wants Dom to plant information into the human mind instead of retrieving it. This process is called Inception, which has been discussed to be a difficult task. Saito wanted this act of inception to be done on his dying competitor's heir, Robert Fischer. Dom and his partners work on a way to plant this idea by going into a dream within a dream, which indicates on how deep the information would be. Throughout the film, Dom faces challenges which are his dead wife and the problems he faces created by his subconscious mind. One of these problems are his children who seem to be appearing in some parts of the film. He also stated that if he were to see the faces of his children, he would be distracted from dream to reality.
The scene I chose was the ending scene where Dom, seemingly awake from the dreams, has returned to his home. Thus, meeting and embracing his children. He also sees their faces in the process which might indicated that he truly is awake. Nevertheless, a top, which was a totem to show the results of dream and reality, didn't not fully fall down and the screen goes black. The director wanted the audience to have an open mind on the ending to provoke them to think of what might have happened. Is he still dreaming or is he truly awake?

What do you think will happen next?
As stated above, I chose the ending scene. In my opinion on what would happen next, I would say that he isn't really truly awake because there isn't enough evidence that he really woke up. In a dream, a fast way to wake up, you need to die but before Dom gets shot, the film cuts to a scene where he immediately woke up. There wasn't a shot heard which might indicate that he might still be dreaming. In my view, Dom will be in a dream state or a limbo for, what might be to him a really long period of time, a merely a few minutes.

Who are these characters?

Dominic 'Dom' Cobb
-Protagonist
-Professional thief who infiltrates people's dreams
-Loves his family

Professor Miles
- Dom's father in-law
-Supports Dom

Dom's Daughter and Son
-Misses their father

• What can you tell about the relationships between the characters in the scene?
As Dom sees his children, he quickly embraces them and ignoring the result of the totem which shows how much the character loves and misses his children.

• Where is it set?
The set is either back in Dominic's home or in his subconscious mind. It is either one, depending on the result of the totem.

• Why has the film/program maker chosen this particular background or location?
Because Dom faced a crisis after his wife's death and his home indicates his longing to meet his children again.

• Look at the props - how are they relevant to the story?
The main prop of this scene is the totem.

• Are any props of particular significance?
Since the totem didn't seem to fall, it simply shows the mystery of what the ending could've been.
